The Keith Moon Movie Petition

Thursday, May 8th, 2014

Keith Moon is a legend. Every drummer worth his salt knows this. He had a style and talent that is unique and all his own. There have been many great drummers both before and after Keith, but besides being great, he was the drummer for The Who.  That alone would be enough to warrant a movie about his life. But Keith’s story is so much bigger than even that. Everyone who knew him speaks with such reverence about his extremes. He was very funny, spontaneous, frustrating and juvenile, and an overall extremist. He lived such a full life despite the fact that it was cut short at the age of 32.

That is why when I heard that Roger Daltrey was producing a biopic of Keith’s life I was incredibly excited. This is a project that should have been made years ago. I had my hopes set very high for this movie. I feel that if anyone can put together a high quality, true portrayal of Keith’s life, it would be Roger. And Mike Myers was to play Keith! It was going to be perfect!

Unfortunately, I just read that this project has recently stalled. Why oh why!?!? Well I just feel that this is unacceptable! I cannot sit on my hands and do nothing when the best opportunity for such an important film goes belly up. With this in mind, I have created a petition to send to the film’s production team to let them know that, we the people will not be denied this valuable historical production. I ask you to please take a moment to sign the petition to get this project back on track. If they see enough names, perhaps it will help find the needed reserves to get this thing back on track.

Sincerely,

Bryan K.

Jeremy Piven As Keith Moon?

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

Keith Moon Jeremy Piven

Just a quick bit of news today…

The star of HBO’s ‘Entourage,’ Jeremy Piven announced to Fox News that he is interested in portraying Keith Moon some time in the future. Interesting news. Perhaps this is a calculated statement to throw his name into the mix? It seems to me that he has the same problem as Mike Myers. He is 46 years old and Keith died at 33.

This news just missed what would have been Moon’s 65th birthday on Aug 23.  Well, we will just have to see what happens. I will keep you posted.

The Horse Tranquilizer Incident

Sunday, August 7th, 2011

So, I came into this great video and wanted to share it with you guys… It definitely cant be considered a Keith Moon video as he is only on camera for about 10 seconds during the entire 8+ minutes.

But his absence is what makes this video great.

Sometime during a Who show on November 20, 1973, Keith downs a pile of horse tranquilizers handed to him by an audience member, and chases them with a bottle of brandy. Evidently mumbling something to the effect of “I can take it, I’m Keith “Fucking” Moon.

As you will see, it all goes downhill from there.

Here are the highlights: The Who are playing the Cow Palace in California. They are an hour into a show on the Quadrophenia tour:

  • At 0:09 Keith’s drums come to a weak halt in the middle of “Wont Get Fooled Again.”
  • At 1:10 Pete tells the crowd that Keith’s passed out.
  • At 2:40 Keith manages to come back on stage, looking quite off balance.
  • At 3:50 Moon passes out a 2nd time, and the roadies drag him off the drum set. This time he is finished.
  • At 5:00 Pete announces that Keith is done for the night.
  • At 5:24 Pete asks the audience, “can anybody play the drums? I mean somebody good.”
  • At 6:30 a lucky guy from the audience named Scott Halpin takes a seat behind the immortal “Pictures of Lilly” drumset.
  • At 6:40 Scot Halpin and the band launch into “Smokestack Lightning” followed by “Spoonful” but the video seems to skip most of the music.
  • At 8:19 Scot Halpin and the band take a bow…

Its pretty amazing. For anyone who wants to hear more about this incident, Scot gave an interview about it, that has some additional details on how he was picked from the audience by none other than Bill Graham himself. Talk about your 15 minutes of fame. This has got to be written into the movie somehow…

Who Should Play Keith Moon?

Sunday, July 17th, 2011

Despite the fact that as of right now the Keith Moon Movie project might currently be stalled, there seems to be quite a bit of discussion over who should play Keith. Originally it was going to be Mike Myers, but at this point, Mike is pushing 50. Despite the great leaps in special effects and makeup, he seems a bit long in the tooth to play someone who died at the age of 33.  There are many who strongly believe that he is just too old at this point, like this Facebook Group, or this IMDB thread.  It also does not seem to be on his radar as there has been no update from him since 2008 or so.

The other name who keeps popping up is Jason Schwartzman. He certainly resembles a younger and thinner Keith Moon.

It turns out that besides being a talented actor,  Jason is actually supposed to be a pretty good drummer as well.
So far I have not found any official word that Jason has ever even considered this, so its seems its only internet chatter. Too bad.

A view point I have noticed based on some of the comments on the petition page is that the person who plays Keith should be a Brit. I actually favor this viewpoint. Now, I am American, and I love the movies we pump out on a regular basis. We have great actors and I am sure an American would do a great job, but in the interest of purity, I would LOVE to see a Brit play Keith. It just makes sense. Also, there is nothing worse than an American who puts on a bad English accent. I remember reading that JK Rowling absolutely insisted that the roles of Harry, Hermione, and Ron go to Brits when they were making the first Harry Potter movie, and you could not have asked for a better outcome.

Rupert Grint and Keith Moon

In fact, if you changed Rupert Grint’s hair color and add a little makeup, he might just pass for Keith Moon. I have no idea if Rupert’s accent is the right British accent. I know there are many shades. But I believe he would pull it off perfectly. He has definitely proven himself as an actor with the Ron Weasley role.

Anyone agree?

About Me

I am just one person who also happens to be a huge Who fan. The legendary Keith Moon has always been a fascinating figure for me. When I heard that there might be a movie about Keith produced by none other than Roger Daltrey, I had to build this site to unleash my enthusiasm.
